This image, taken through light refracting paper glasses, renders the Art Theatre on 4th in Long Beach, California in a fragmented, prismatic field of vision. The distortion is intentional, echoing altered perception while staying rooted in a very real place that has long shaped my imagination.
The theatre is a formative site of artistic possibility for me. It represents an early encounter with the idea that indie production, experimentation, and self-directed creative life were not distant ideals but tangible, local. That proximity altered what felt achievable for myself and those closest to me.
Without the marquee nor sky visible, the image stands to present the local gayborhood theater as a staple without any indication of time. The theater is to me as it was when I was a teen; many locals who have done the Rocky Horror or Nosferatur traditions there feel the same.
